You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Chantal Jandard, a Psychology undergraduate student of the University of Waterloo, Canada. The objective of the research study is to investigate how people determine what is considered funny and what is not.


If you decide to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete a roughly 15 minute online survey. You will be asked to read several jokes and to rate them on a variety of items. If you prefer not to complete the survey on the web, please contact us and we will make arrangements to provide you another method of participation. Participation in this study is voluntary. You may decline to answer any questions that you do not wish to answer and you can withdraw your participation at any time. By participating in this research, you will benefit by gaining experience with how research is conducted. Please note that this study has not been formally reviewed by any ethics committee, although there are no known or anticipated risks from participating in this study. Please note that some of the jokes in the study may be offense.


All information you provide is considered completely confidential; indeed, your name will not be included or in any other way associated, with the data collected in the study. The web site is programmed to collect responses alone and will not collect any information that could potentially identify you (such as machine identifiers). Furthermore, because the interest of this study is in the average responses of the entire group of participants, you will not be identified individually in any way in any written reports of this research.
